As Gen Z (those born 1997 - 2012) continue to join the workforce in larger numbers, they are leaving a distinct mark on nearly every aspect of workplace culture, and this includes business travel.

In fact, a staggering 79% of Gen Z business travellers say they want to travel for work to explore new places. Not only that, but 41% say they want their employers to allow them to extend their business trip for leisure travel. 

Unlike previous generations, the majority of whom kept work trips strictly professional, Gen Z travellers like to extend their business trip in order to explore new cities and squeeze in personal experiences in their free time.

Some even enjoy working remotely from different destinations for a few days before or after their important meetings or events, to get the most out of their time away. For them, travel isn’t just about work; it’s also about enrichment and experience.

This shift is supported by their comfort and ease in using remote tools and technology. After all, Gen Z workers are digital natives, and many see no reason why they should be confined to a hotel room or a corporate boardroom, no matter where they are in the world.

A laptop or tablet and a stable internet connection are all they need to log in from a beachside café or a boutique Airbnb to be able to do their job. 

Tech-first travel planning

Following on from this last point, tech plays a huge role in how Gen Z approaches business travel. Unlike older generations who still rely on more traditional travel planning and organisation, they expect seamless digital experiences and mobile-first options.

For example, they may use apps to check flights, find accommodation, navigate cities, and even translate languages. They rely on cloud-based systems to access shared workspaces and instant messaging and video conferencing tools to stay in touch with their team.

Not only that, but this generation leans heavily on peer reviews and social media recommendations. So, before their trip, they are more likely to use platforms like TikTok and Instagram to find recommendations for food, hotels and day trips, even for professional travel.

Prioritising sustainability

Another top priority for Gen Z is sustainability, and this is (or should be) reshaping business travel policies. They're more likely to question the necessity of travel and advocate for greener options, such as choosing to fly with airlines that have strong sustainability credentials.

This environmental consciousness is influencing employers as well. Companies hoping to attract and retain Gen Z talent are having to rethink their travel programs.

They are focusing more on eco-friendly accommodation, encouraging virtual meetings when possible, and promoting sustainable travel practices across the board. 

Seeking authentic, inclusive experiences 

There was a time when business travel meant putting your employees up in a swanky hotel and allowing them to wine and dine at the top restaurants.

But Gen Z travellers prioritise authenticity over corporate polish. Even when travelling for work, many prefer to stay in locally-owned accommodations with more character over cookie-cutter business hotels.

They will seek out local restaurants, family-owned businesses and culturally enriching experiences, even during short business trips.

In addition, inclusivity and representation matter deeply to Gen Z, so they will favour brands, accommodation and travel partners that support and offer safe travel guidance for marginalised groups. 

Redefining the purpose of business travel

Finally, Gen Z is challenging the very need for business travel. Yes, they may love to travel when required, but they are also the first to ask, “Could this be a virtual meeting instead?”. 

They prefer and advocate for travel that has a clear purpose, like team-building, conferences, or in-person client engagement, rather than routine meetings that could easily be handled online.

Gen Z is pushing businesses to think more strategically about how and why their employees travel.

Travel should no longer just be a perk or a status symbol; it’s an intentional, value-aligned activity, and these policies can help to attract and retain the next generation of workers.
